My name is Vivian Beer. I love history. A particular interest of mine is how world events and technological advances have influenced small rural communities. I grew up on a farm in a small community in Prince Edward Island – Clyde River – on the Bannockburn Road, named after the famous Battle of Bannockburn of 1314. The name of our farm is Ardmore or Àird Mhòr is Scottish Gaelic, meaning great height, which is appropriate. It was given the name by the first owner, Angus MacPhail, at the beginning of 1800 and who would have been a Gaelic speaker. I placed a little studio there as a creative escape from the city, a quick escape as my city home is only 15 minutes away. That’s PEI; nothing is too far away. I spend a lot of time looking at the expansive view from the hill, as maybe Angus did, or maybe not, as he would have been busy working as I was as a child with lots to do on the farm.
I enjoy writing stories, poetry and taking photos but they are all inspired by my love of history. It’s the details of history that grab my attention, a question or a clue can take me down a path where I can learn more about the place where I grew up, moved away from, and now live again.
